j5 Create ScreenCast

The j5 Create ScreenCast (technically the JVAW56) is a dongle-like device that lets you wirelessly connect to your TV or monitor.

What makes the J5 stand out is it supports AirPlay, Chromecast, and Mirracast.

To be clear, the J5 Create ScreenCast is not a streaming stick; it sits closer to being a Chromecast or the sort of thing you might have in your office if you can wirelessly project to a screen. The difference is the J5 Create doesn’t require any app, as it will support whatever native wireless screen mirroring is supported at the OS level.

J5 ScreenCast Connect Setup

I am not going to share setup instructions as the instructions on the J5 ScreenCast Connect website and user guide have good instructions. If you’re having trouble with this, I suggest contacting J5 directly.

A helpful tip, though, is if you don’t require internet on the device that is connecting wirelessly to the J5 ScreenCast you don’t have to connect it to your WiFi network. I was able to mirror my iPhone by just connecting to the ScreenCast SSID directly.

J5 ScreenCast Connect Connection / Factory Reset Troubleshooting

The area I can help and provide guidance is in factory resetting your J5 ScreenCast. This assumes you have connected the J5 to your WiFi network.

If you’re unable to connect to the J5 using the IP address it shows on the welcome screen:

http://192.168.203.1

Then the issue is that your J5 has connected to your WiFi and probably picked up a DHCP (internal -network) IP address.  The screen that the J5 shows seems to be (mostly) a static image so it will always show the 192.168.203.1 address even when that’s not the address. This can be confusing because you will still be able to wireless screencast, mirror, etc. but not browse the web interface to reset the J5 ScreenCast.

The solution, which involves a little bit of effort, is to either:

Option 1.
  1. Turn off the WiFi connection that your ScreenCast is using.
  2. Restart the ScreenCast so it has no WiFi
  3. Connect to the ScreenCast WiFi SSID, typically Screencast XXXX. The default password is 1234568
  4. Browse to the ScreenCast to web UI and factory reset the ScreenCast.
Option 2.
  1. Login to your Router
  2. Find the ScreenCast in your list of DHCP clients
  3. Note down the ScreenCast’s actual IP address
  4. Browse to that IP address and the web UI will load and you can factory reset the J5 ScreenCast.

The above options are the only things that work, there’s no factory reset button, factory reset pinhole, or another way to reset the ScreenCast than via the web UI.

Summary

As a small dongle, you can throw it in a bag, and take it anywhere, I have no complaints. I use it for business purposes so I can’t warrant that it’s great for Hulu, Netflix (or gaming) but for PowerPoint presentations it works as required.
