Updated: This post was update in May 2024, as I wanted to confirm to others that the MB169B+ does work with a USB C cable.
I own the ASUS MB169B+ Portable Monitor. It’s a bit dated now (mine was made June 2018), but you can often find them for under $30 on eBay. Amazon still sells the ASUS MB169B+ new, but given they are from 2018, there are now better external monitors now available for the price. But for occasional use and if you manage to grab one second hand, they are affordable travel monitors.
This guide is to help other ASUS 169B+ monitor owners get the right software, cables, etc. so you can get the most life out of your monitor.
ASUS MB169B+ Portable Monitor Drivers (Windows and macOS)
I use the MB169B+ on both Windows and macOS laptops. ASUS has official software here, but the monitor uses DisplayLink technology, which is made by Synaptics. As such, you can just download the official DisplayLink software which is updated much more frequently that the ASUS version.
Get the latest ASUS MB169B+ drivers:
- ASUS MB169B+ Windows Driver
- ASUS MB169B+ macOS Driver
- ASUS MB169B+ drivers for Chrome and Android can be found here.
No, you cannot use the ASUS MB169B+ with iPads, iPhones, or your Nintendo Switch. As you need Display Link drivers or native Display Link support in the OS. If you’re after something that works everywhere, you are better off getting a newer cheap portable monitor off Amazon. This KYY portable model can often be picked up for under $80 and even less with a coupon.
ASUS MB169B+ Power Cable
The ASUS MB169B+ does not need a power cable, it’s powered by USB. If your USB port doesn’t give enough power, this may explain why your ASUS external monitor won’t turn on. In that case, you need a Y cable splitter so you can draw power from 2 USB ports, this cable matters cable is your best option. If you are using the MB169B+ with an external dock, you may run into power issues as unless your dock has external power, the power draw by the dock will mean the ASUS monitor won’t get enough power.
ASUS MB169B+ USB Cable
Yes, you can use a USB C cable but you need a USB C to USB 3.1 Micro B cable. I use this one from UGreen, it’s under $10.
If you just want a USB A to USB 3.1 Micro B cable, UGreen make a USB A to USB 3.1 cable as well that works perfectly.
ASUS MB169B+ Replacement Case
I haven’t found a comparable replacement case. You can use a 15.6″ laptop sleeve but you will need a stand. The original case is not a great stand and this $10 stand from Amazon is so much better. I use this stand for my ASUS MB169B+ but it’s got enough strength to hold an iPad (the ASUS monitor is incredibly light).
Hope this helps someone else!
