If you change your WiFi network (either you decided to upgrade to an Eero or moved home), you often have to set up your Apple Homekit devices (again). Either way, you may find yourself in this weird position where the Apple Home app will not let you Invite People to be part of your home, or the people you invite to your Apple Home are not receiving invitations.

There is a fix to this Apple Home invitation bug. It will need to be done on your own Apple device and the Apple device of other members of your household you are trying to invite.

Important Warning: Before you begin, please understand this will reset and wipe the HomeKit settings on any device that installs the profile below. You will need to set up HomeKit again. Yes, I know it’s frustrating, and I wish there were another way – but this is the only fix I found that works. The good news is it won’t recursively wipe Homekit profiles. So if you install it, it will wipe and fix your future HomeKit setup. Then if someone in your household installs it, it will wipe their HomeKit setup (but not impact yours), and then they can be invited to your HomeKit Household again.

Here’s what you need to fix the Apple Home invites not working. This works on iOS 16+.

  1. In Safari on your iOS device that isn’t sending invites, install the HomeKit Reset Profile from Apple.
  2. You will receive the “This website is trying to download a configuration profile. Do you want to allow this?” alert. Tap “Allow.”
  3. It (may) then prompt you to “Choose a Device, On which device would you like to install this profile?” alert, tap “iPhone.”
  4. You will then get the “Profile Downloaded” alert and be prompted to “Review the profile in the Settings app if you want to install it.” tap Close.
  5. Go to the iOS Settings App; immediately under your iOS Apple ID User Name should be a menu item that says “Profile Downloaded.” Tap it.iOS Home Reset Profile
  6. The “Install Profile” dialog will appear. Tap “Install”. You will then be prompted for your passcode, enter your passcode.
  7. The “Consent” dialog will appear. This explains that it will reset your Home configuration and require you to set up HomeKit again.

Reset Home Configuration Warning

Important: Before you click Install, remember what I write in the Important Warning above, and please read what Apple is also telling you – it will reset and require you to set up everything in Home Kit again. If you’re the intended recipient of an invite, this should not be a worry (unless you are a member of multiple Homes) – but please understand it wipes any HomeKit Homes on your device. It’s the only way to fix this HomeKit bug (not my fault, blame Apple).

  1.  Tap Install.
  2. Tap Install (again).
  3. Tap Done.
  4. Go back to the main iOS Settings menu (the one that shows your AppleID User Name) and scroll down until you see the (new) Home option under Health. Tap the Home icon.

Tip: If you don’t see the Home option (above), you may need to restart your iPhone or reinstall the profile again. This seems to be yet another Apple bug (sigh).

  1. You will get a “Reset Configuration” dialog. Tap “Reset Configuration”
  2. You will get an alert reminding you (again) that this will reset, delete, and disconnect all your Home Accessories. This is your last chance to change your mind if you ignored all the previous warnings – but to fix the HomeKit bug, your only option is to tap “Reset Home Configuration.”
  3. It will look like it hasn’t done anything…  but it has, so tap Settings in the top left to go back to Settings.
  4. Load the Apple Home app – there may be a brief message”Loading Accessories”  before it shows “Welcome to Home” as the Apple HomeKit app is now fully reset.
  5. Tap Continue.

The next step depends on whether you will be the Resident (Owner) or simply the Resident.

  • If you are the Resident (Owner), set up your HomeKit devices again, then invite people. Again, please don’t blame me that you need to do the setup again. It’s an Apple bug.
  • If you are the Resident, ask the Resident (Owner) to send you an invite. Once you get the invite, tap “Accept” on the prompt. You may need to tap the “…” icon in the top right-hand corner to switch to the Home you were just invited to. If you don’t see any HomeKit devices after you tap Accept, it’s almost 100% guaranteed you need to switch to the home.
  1. You’re all done.

Final thoughts… The HomeKit reset Profile will automatically delete after 24 hours. If you’re in a hurry and want to delete it immediately, you can do so in Settings, General, VPN & Device Management, tap “Home Reset Config,” tap “Remove Profile,” and follow the prompts.

I hope this helps someone else!
