If you have been lucky enough to get a PS5 you may want to expand the storage. Sharing based on my personal experience, this is the best budget SSD and Heatsink combination for the PS5.

The entire setup cost me $100 and provides you with affordable extra storage for your PS5 and excellent passive cooling.

This combination is the best value for money M2 SSD for the PS5. Upgrading your PS5 storage with an extra 500Gb.

The Best PS5 SSD

I am using the Western Digital SN850. It’s under $90 on Amazon. This will give you an extra 500Gb of storage. Yes, you can get higher-capacity versions, but it’s all a cost trade-off. If your budget allows, then get the 1Tb WD 850. The 1TB SN850 costs almost twice as much and I was trying to squeeze this all in under a $100 budget.

The WD850 is a great value high-speed SSD for the PS5, I have used the older SN750 model in my gaming laptop and the newer SN850 is fast! I have heard you can use the SN750 in the PS5, which will save you a few bucks, but the SN750 is technically not rated as fast enough for the PS5.

And No, you do not want the Western Digital SN850 with the heatsink, because the Western Digital heatsink won’t provide enough passive thermal cooling. More on that later.

The Best PS5 Heatsink

The best heatsink for the PS5 I have found is this one from Pelote, which sells for about $15. I have seen it drop as low as $10. This is a heavy-duty heatsink that provides really good thermal cooling. It’s a commercial-quality heatsink.

The best news is that the Pelote heatsink fits in the PS5. So if you’re looking for a heatsink that fits the PS5 expansion bay and you’re using another SSD, you can’t go wrong with this heatsink.

Why do you want a quality heatsink for your PS5 SSD?

Heat is the enemy of all electronics. Keeping the SSD cool will extend the life of your SSD but also ensure optimal performance. Seriously, don’t skip on the heatsink. The Pelote heatsink on your PS5 can also be used with a different SSD should you upgrade your SSD capacity at a later date.

Installing an SSD on your PS5

I’m not going to write up installation instructions because Sony has official instructions on how to install an SSD on your PS5 here. Sony also has an official PS5 SSD Installation instruction video here. The process is easy if you’re comfortable using a screwdriver. Once installed, if you’ve done everything properly, your PS5 will prompt you to format the SSD on startup.
