If you’re looking to buy one, it’s fair to expect that there will be a deal come Amazon Prime Day. There were Amazon Prime deals on the first Prime Day the Kindle Scribe was available, where you could get a basic Kindle Scribe for a little over US$250 and premium bundles for about 24% off. So I am hoping and expecting the same again for the next Amazon Prime Day. As a guide, $230-$250 is about the best price on Prime Day for the basic Kindle Scribe.
Best ways to save on Amazon Kindle Scribe
The best way to currently save on the Kindle Scribe is to buy one of the bundles, the basic Kindle Scribe bundle is US$380. This is for the 16Gb version, with a pen and fabric case. This is the version I bought because the Scribe is a 1st Gen device, and I plan to upgrade after a few years. I think 16Gb is ample storage. I own the Remarkable 2, it only has 8Gb, I use it all the time and have barely used any memory; likewise, my Kindle Oasis is 8Gb, and I have barely scratched the surface of using any memory.
Tips to Save Money on the Kindle Scribe
These are the best money-saving tips for the Kindle Scribe:
- if you already own a Kindle, trade it in at Amazon’s Trade-In Center. The Scribe works as a Kindle and an eInk writing tablet, so you really don’t need them both. Amazon is also offering 20% off the Kindle Scribe with a Kindle trade-in!
- only get the 16Gb version, my Remarkable 2 has 8Gb, and that was more than enough. So the 16Gb Kindle Scribe should be more than sufficient. Remember, there are no other apps, games, email, etc., only eBooks to download for the Kindle Scribe.
- the cheapest Kindle Scribe is the 16Gb+Pen version, you have to get a pen so this is the cheapest version without a cover.
- if you want a cover, you have two (2) options, buy a bundle or buy the cover separately. The Kindle Scribe bundles are the best value. Unbundled, the Kindle Scribe fabric cover costs US$59.99, so the base scribe+a fabric cover costs $390 – so buy a bundle. It’s cheaper and better value (you also get a charger).
If in doubt, buy a bundle. If you want the best Kindle Scribe experience, I would upgrade to the premium pen (that’s what I did).
Kindle Scribe Buyer’s Guide
As a buyer’s guide to the Amazon Scribe, remember you must at least get a stylus. The Kindle Scribe requires an EMR pen. The basic packaging (no case) typically costs US$250ish on Prime Day and includes a basic pen. You really don’t need to buy Amazon’s charger, as the Scribe charges via USB C. As for a case, that’s really a personal preference, and cheap after-market cases are available (this one is half the price of the official Scribe case).
Amazon Trade-In Offers on Kindle Scribe
Amazon will accept a trade-in of your original Kindle (here’s the Amazon trade-in center). The 20% discount Amazon gives on your next purchase after trade-in DOES apply to the Kindle Scribe. I know, I tried when I pre-ordered my Scribe. You have to return your Kindle first, so you will be Kindle-less until it arrives. I also got a gift card for my Kindle Oasis to save a little bit more money.
