Best Paid Skype Number Alternative: Voip.MS
If you’re looking for a solid alternative to Skype, VoIP.ms is the best I have found. It’s flexible, with no contracts, and operates on a per-minute basis, which can be really handy for more occasional use. A US number costs just $0.85 per month, making it a very affordable.
VoIP.ms also supports number porting (so if you’re looking to move numbers from Skype, VoIP.ms is perfect. The process is straightforward, though I’ve found the Skype porting side of things to be a bit slow (probably more on Skype’s end). Pro tip: your Skype account number is your full phone number with the international code (e.g., +1), and the account PIN is 0000 (four zeroes). I’ve written a guide to Skype porting here.
While the main website of VoIP.ms is not as user-friendly as Skype, using VoIP.ms with a VOIP app like Acrobits or Groundwire makes things easier (Acrobits makes Groundwire, it’s just a more advanced version of the software). Groundwire will set you back US$10+tax. VoIP.ms have an Acrobits setup guide here, which got me up and running without a headache.
For the price, VoIP.ms is the best option I have found as we say goodbye to Skype.
