Recently my Google Home/Google Nest started giving the “Something went wrong. Try again in a few seconds” error. The issue was intermittent, and restarting the device or rebooting my router sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. What fixed it for me was disabling IPv6 on my router.
So the simple answer, how to fix the Google Home “Something went wrong” error is to disable IPv6.
Yes, this means all your devices at home lose IPv6. I have searched, but there doesn’t seem to be any way to disable IPv6 on Google Home devices. There’s an old Google support post that suggests you can (or could), but it seems to be for a different version of the app or just hopelessly outdated.
I can’t explain why disabling IPv6 fixes the Google Home “Something went wrong” error. Just that it does. If I was to guess, reading the official Google IPv6 Support documentation, it may be because my (and your) router or ISP is using something other than the official IPv6 version.
Sorry, I can’t give instructions on how to disable IPv6 on your router, as there are too many out there (I suggest you ask your internet provider). That said, the instructions are below if you’re a Verizon FiOS customer with a G3100 Router. At the time of writing, this was my current home setup.
How to Disable IPv6 – Verizon G3100
Please Note: I’m not affiliated with Verizon and do not and cannot provide technical support if this breaks something else on your network.
- On your web browser, go to https://192.168.1.1/.
- If you get a security warning that the connection is not secure, click Advanced and then continue to 192.168.1.1
- Login to your G3100 Router (the password is on the back of the router).
- On the top navigation, click Advanced.
- On the left-hand column navigation bar, click Network Settings.
- Click IPv6
- On the right-hand side, slide the “Enabled” switch to off.
- The changes save automatically.
- You’re done!
I hope this helps someone else!
