If you’re Australian, the best VOIP solution I have found is CrazyTel. They are only available in Australia and for Australian numbers only. To be clear, you can’t sign up from outside Australia. If you’re outside Australia and need an Australian phone number or a phone number for any other country, I recommend Voip.ms. That said, for Australians needing an Australian VOIP number, CrazyTel is an affordable, reliable VoIP provider.

CrazyTel do offer their own app, which is easy to setup (and it’s actually a limited feature set skinned version from Acrobits). For most users, CrazyTel’s own app would be enough, but if you use multiple VOIP providers, or want other features then you can use Groundwire or Acrobits with CrazyTel, you can – here’s what you need to know.

CrazyTel Groundwire Setup Guide.

Important: Before you begin, you will need to setup a SIP Trunk in Crazytel. You need your SIP Trunk ID and Password, this can be done on the CrazyTel website via the SIP Trunks Menu (left hand navigation). If you get stuck on how to do this, you should contact CrazyTel Support. Make sure you save your SIP Trunk ID and SIP Trunk Password, you need this to setup Acrobits/Groundwire.

  1. Open Groundwire (or Acrobits)
  2. Tap the Cog (Settings) icon in the top right corner of the app.
  3. Tap “Accounts”.
  4. Tap the “+” sign.
  5. Select “Generic SIP Account”, and complete the fields as follows:
  • Title: Enter whatever makes sense for you, I use my VOIP phone number as the Title.
  • Username: Your  CrazyTel SIP Trunk ID (this is NOT your main account username)
  • Password: Your CrazyTel SIP Trunk Password (this is NOT your main account password)
  • Domain: sip.crazytel.net.au:25160
  1. Tap Advanced Settings.
  2. Scroll down, change “Transport Protocol” to TCP.
  3. Scroll down, change “Expires” to 180.
  4. Scroll down, under Messaging, turn on “SIMPLE”..
  5. On a previous version of Groundwire, I also had to do the following – but it’s not showing in the current version.
  6. Set Composing Notifications to “No”.
  7. Set Delivery Notifications to “No”.
  8. Tap “Done”.
  9. Tap “Save”.
  10. You’re done!

If you did everything correctly, the main Groundwire screen with the dialpad will show your account in the top right hand corner, in green. If it fails (is red), chances are you miskeyed your SIP Username/Password – remember it’s not your CrazyTel Account password, it’s your SIP Trunk account details.

Hope this helps someone else.

PS. I can’t provide technical support or help beyond this blog post, CrazyTel has excellent support but at time of writing, they don’t have an official guide or support for Groundwire and you may be better off using CrazyTels own (free) app. The above setup is better for people like me who use multiple VOIP services.
