I own the XTEINK X4 and it’s the coolest portable eInk reader I have owned. I find I read more because it’s the perfect pocketable size and add to that the community that is making hacks, mods, and more adds to the fun. I wrote this XTEINK FAQ to help others get the most out of this great device.

How do you change the XTEINK X4 language from Chinese to English
This is easy to do, I wrote a quick guide here – but in short, it’s in the settings menu.
How do install the International English firmware on the XTEINK X4?
The best way to do this is via this firmware flasher, select Flash English Firmware. The official Chinese firmware tends to get more regular updates and is often a few versions ahead.
Is it safe to buy the XTEINK X4 from AliExpress?
Safe is relative. Yes(ish). AliExpress sellers often bait and switch showing just cases for <$20 which look like the X4, but is a case only. Make sure you look and check it’s the actual X4. If you’re in the US, watch out for tariffs. Everywhere else, look out for surprise shipping charges. Make sure you record a video when you receive it and unbox the X4, as it’s the best way to deal with any issues with AliExpress support. That said, if this worries you, the XTEINK X4 now ships from Amazon (next day delivery).
How long does AliExpress Shipping of the X4 take?
How long is a piece of string? Seriously, it can take anywhere from 1 week to 2-3 weeks. Typically, AliExpress sellers bulk ship orders. This means it will sit as “pending” for several days. Then from there is customs clearance in your home country. For me and for my friends, it’s taken 2 weeks from order to arrival but that’s not a guarantee. If you order during Chinese National Holidays e.g. Chinese New Year, expect delays. If you need your XTEINK urgently or faster, it’s better to order the XTEINK X4 from Amazon.
I am in the US, what about the tariffs if I ship the X4 from China?
Yes, you will have to factor in tariffs. You pay tariffs. Not China. You need to be aware that any changes in tariffs after you order are your responsibility. Keep in mind, if tariffs change this could impact your delivery. AliExpress (mostly) includes tariffs in the final cost at checkout. Want less headaches, buy your X4 from Amazon.
Can I buy the XTEINK X4 on Amazon?
YES! The XTEINK X4 is officially available on Amazon, there are also some 3rd party accessories. some cases starting to show up on Amazon, including this leather flip case and this TPU case. There is also the case with tempered glass screen protectors. I don’t have experience with them, just sharing FYI.
How do I flash custom firmware to my X4?
It’s easy and safe, connect your X4 to your computer, fire up Chrome (only Chrome is currently supported) and head to this site. If you want to learn more about custom firmware, read this post.
What is Crosspoint?
Crosspoint is a community developed firmware for the XTEINK X4, it adds a lot of features and is better for English speaking X4 owners. You can learn more about the Crosspoint in this post or read more on the official Crosspoint Github.
Where do I get Crosspoint?
How do I flash Crosspoint?
You can flash Crosspoint using the web flasher here. Make sure you backup your factory firmware first. Select Flash Crosspoint.
Do I need the files/folders in the included microSD card?
No, they’re just demo files, books, images – they are not needed.
What is the maximum microSD card size on the X4?
The maximum supported microSD is 512Gb.  I personally use a 256Mb Sandisk card.
Which microSD card should I use with the XTEINK X4?
I recommend replacing the factory microSD card with a 256Mb Sandisk card. The factory included microSD card is cheap and can both overheat (make your X4 feel warm) or worse, fail.
What should I format the microSD card as?
The XTEINK X4 requires microSD cards to be formatted as exFAT.
How do I transfer files to my XTEINK X4?
Either copy files directly to the microSD card (get yourself a microSD card reader). Or use the WiFi transfer feature. WiFi transfer is slow and you are 100x better using a card reader.
Why can’t I transfer files to the XTEINK X4 over USB C?
The XTEINK X4 does not support USB C data transfer. This is a feature, not a bug.
What is the best 3D printed case for the XTEINK X4?
This is my personal favorite. Your X4 slides in and you can reverse slide it in to protect the screen.
Should you buy a black or white X4?
That’s up to you, the black X4 is typically cheaper. I own both. I prefer the white, as the screen matches the bezels and makes it feel more open and easier to read – but that’s me. There are reports the white version has an eInk fading issue in direct sunlight, but there is a patch for this in Crosspoint.
What is the XTEINK X4 / XTEINK X3 / XTEINK S4?
If you have read this far, I hope you know what the X4 is! The XTEINK X3, released in 2026, is a smaller device – you can learn more here. The XTEINK S4 is a yet-to-be-released more advanced model but there are S4 leaks here.
What accessories are worth buying?
The XTEINK X4 comes with a screen protecter and a 16Gb microSD card. This means you can use it “as is” out of the box. I bought the flip case, it’s pretty cool. I would buy a better microSD card (256Mb Sandisk card) as the included microSD card can overheat.
How do transfer Amazon/Kindle books?
Amazon Kindle Books are typical DRM (Digital Rights Management) locked so you can’t transfer them to your X4. Get yourself a cheap Kindle.
Where can I find books that work with the X4?
The are 2 great sources 1/ Project Gutenberg as a source for free EPUB books. If you’re not sure where to start, the top downloaded list is a great place. 2/ Standard eBooks is another great source, the EPUBs are better formatted that Gutenberg and again, all books are out of copyright and in the public domain. Start by sorting by most popular. You can download the compatible or advanced EPUB formats, I use compatible, they’re half the size.
