I own the XTEINK X4 and love it (grab one on Amazon), it’s the best ultra compact eReader I have found, has a great and active development community, and I find myself reading more. I’ve written a guide for the X4, a list of X4 FAQs, but this troubleshooting guide is specifically for people having issues setting up their X4.  This guide will help you fix common problems and issues with the XTEINK X4 eReader and is written by me, an actual owner of an X4 and is based on my own experience.

If it’s not answered above, you may have better luck with the XTEINK X4 FAQ.

The language on my XTEINK X4 is set to Chinese

You can change the language to English on the XTEINK, even if you bought the Chinese version. See this guide. If you want to flash the international firmware, use this tool and select Flash English Firmware. Keep in mind, if you don’t set the language to English, it will still be in Chinese even on International firmware.

My books or files on my XTEINK X4 are corrupted, the microSD card is corrupted

The included 16GB/32GB microSD card is not reliable and known to fail. Older versions of X4’s shipped with 32GB, new ship with 16GB (global memory crisis). Get yourself a reputable microSD card from Amazon. I use a Sandisk. The microSD card MUST be formatted as exFAT (not FAT, exFAT) and don’t do a fast format.

The XTEINK X4 crashes or hangs on startup

It’s most often because the microSD card is faulty or it’s not formatted as exFAT. You must format as exFAT. No exceptions. Don’t fast format your microSD. If you’re on Crosspoint, you could be in a bootloop if the card is corrupted.

The XTEINK X4 is stuck on a bootloop, constantly reboots in Crosspoint

If you’re on Crosspoint, remove your microSD card, stick in your card reader, and delete the hidden .crosspoint folder. You may need to enable show hidden/system files in your OS. You will lose your reading progress, but you should now be able to reboot without any issues.

The eInk text on my X4 is fading/fades in sunlight

This is a known issue with the white X4, you should install Crosspoint and turn on the sunlight fix. To learn more about XTEINK X4 custom firmware, see this post.

The X4 is getting warm or hot to touch

If it’s getting warm, it’s most likely because the microSD card is faulty. The included microSD card is known to be unreliable. Get yourself a reputable microSD card from Amazon. If it’s still running warm or hot after you get a new microSD card, then it’s a battery fault. Although I haven’t heard or read about battery issues.

Unable to transfer files via USB C to my XTEINK X4

You can’t, this is a feature not a bug. The best way to transfer files is using a microSD card reader connected to your PC and dragging/dropping files. This one from UGREEN is great and under US$10. It’s also possible to transfer files via WiFi, but I find using a USB card reader is faster and more reliable.

Unable to connect my XTEINK X4 to WiFi

If your WiFi password has a space, that can be an issue. I’ve also found that you sometimes need to retry 2-3 times. I’m yet to work out exactly why, might be an issue with mesh networks, or a lag between “connecting” and when you try to do something over WiFi e.g. file transfer, file update.

The XTEINK X4 software update fails, unable to update software

If there’s a new release of the software, the servers can get temporarily overloaded. So just give it some time and try again 2-3 times. The issue could be WiFi related (see WiFi issues above). Worst case, flash an update using the Crosspoint web flash tool.

Unable to flash Crosspoint or other firmware

You must use Chrome to flash Crosspoint. Your X4 must be turned on (not in sleep mode). You need to be connected to your computer via a USB C cable that does data transfer (try a different cable). You also MUST restart your X4 after flashing by pressing and releasing the small “Reset” button near the bottom right, followed quickly by pressing and holding of the main power button for about 3 seconds to boot into the new firmware.
