Should you buy a Dell Laptop? No.
The answer is No. You should not buy a Dell Laptop. Dell has quality control issues and poor warranty support. There are better alternatives to Dell.
- I have owned a Dell gaming laptop plagued with overheating issues.
- A Dell laptop with non-replaceable parts.
- And a Dell laptop with a hinge that failed 6 months into the warranty period.
The biggest issue with Dell is they do not provide any warranty for their laptop hinges. Don’t believe me? Here’s what Dell says on their website (my emphasis added):
If the laptop hinge or hinge assembly fails while inside the purchased warranty period;
- Contact Dell Technical Support
- The Dell Technical Support agent will troubleshoot with you. They will investigate the issue to verify that the failure was not customer-caused damage, abuse, misuse, or accidental damage.
- At our discretion, Dell may or may not replace the hinge and/or the hinge assembly, or any other plastics, depending on the findings of the investigative process above.
- If the system is covered under Accidental Damage Service the hinges may be repaired 1 time per calendar year.

That’s right, Dell makes you roll the dice on whether the laptop hinge will be covered by warranty or you need to buy an extended warranty. In my experience, to get Dell to even consider a laptop hinge warranty repair you need to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) which means weeks of energy and effort. Don’t buy a Dell.
I have owned other laptops, Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, and their hinges have given me many years of faithful and reliable service. Fulfilling the expectation that a laptop screen will stay open and the hinge will last. On the other hand, with very light use, my Dell Laptop hinges have given out in less than a year. Dell also refused to refund the purchase, pushing the blame to the retailer who was not at fault other than for foolishly selling Dell laptops. It’s Dell that used sub-standard components, not the retailer.
Maybe I just had a string of bad luck with Dell laptops? But 3 different Dell laptops over the course of 3 years and I have learned a very expensive lesson. Don’t make the same mistake, do not buy a Dell. You can and do deserve better.
For what it’s worth, I am not the only one who thinks you should never buy a dell.
