This is quick overview of the XTEINK 400kb v 128M drama and the role that EEGOGO has played in the dispute (and why S4 preorders were delayed). The dispute all boils down to memory (RAM).
On April 24th, XTEINK posted an apology on Rednote about a XTEINK X4 specification error. If you follow XTEINK, you’ll know their posts are a mix of fun and playing to their fan base (feedback, features, etc). This one was more formal, probably the most formal I have seen from XTEINK, which is how you know something went wrong. Don’t worry if you’re not able to read Chinese of the apology, here’s the tldr; for those that don’t read Chinese.
The issue: the X4 had been listed as having 128M of RAM.
The reality, it doesn’t. The actual usable RAM is around 400KB.
XTEINK blamed it on an internal review mistake and said the wrong spec had been copied across multiple listings. They claimed they had now corrected it everywhere and apologized. Although Rednote users were pointing out many places where it still hadn’t been corrected. The user feedback reminds me a bit of this XKCD cartoon.
Chinese Consumer Sentiment Backlash against XTEINK
One buyer posted a detailed complaint citing Chinese consumer law, specifically Article 20(1) and Article 55(1) of the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Protection of Consumer Rights and Interests, complete with a transaction snapshot showing the 128M RAM listing.
Their argument:
- the listing said 128M
- the device has ~400KB
- that’s a 300× difference
- under the law, that’s misleading
- customer wants/expects a refund + triple compensation
If the last part sounds like over-reach, it’s actually allowed under Chinese consumer law. There were more than a few other users citing this and claiming they would file a complaint. Some genuinely angry, others with the “why not, free money” attitude.
Hard to argue with the logic. But it’s also unlikely to get anywhere #NotALawyer because like everywhere, social media complaints are mostly posturing vs action. And even if the regulator was to investigate, it’s hard to argue there is harm because the X4 works as expected.
EEGOGO’s role in the XTEINK Memory Complaint
I’ve been sharing about EEGOGO (formerly EINKING), who have been teasing their own microreader eInk devices for a while. It seems EEGOGO are the ones who flagged the issue, although I still can’t track the original source on WeChat. That said, they’re taking shots at XTEINK. They posted a light, slightly smug comment about their new EEGOGO P4 Lite device saying their own announcement had been delayed “because another brand’s fake storage specs caused us problems.” This latter “delay” part is because both XTEINK and EEGOGO are using a loophole to sell coupons rather than products during their preorders and this got shutdown… more on that later.
They didn’t name XTEINK in the post on the right, but we all know who they mean… haha.
XTEINK, in their apology, called EEGOGO’s behavior “aggressive marketing.” So yes, there’s a bit of a back‑and‑forth happening. All of it playing out on Rednote. The aggressive marketing comment by XTEINK is also because there are reports on WeChat that EEGOGO is offering one of their devices for free for people who do file a complaint with China’s consumer law regulator about XTEINK. This all resulted in both XTEINK canceling the S4 preorders and EEGOGO closing their preorders.
Why?
EEGOGOO and XTEINK both use WeChat for pre-orders. They are also both doing pre-orders in the form of purchasing a coupon. This coupon than allows users to redeem the coupon for a pre-order. This allows both companies to crowdfund the first manufacturing run. This is technically a violation of WeChat rules, and it seems there were complaints made by both companies about each other, resulting in their payment/sales being suspended. Again, 101 of why you don’t pick public fights or name competitors as you’ll both get hurt.
Does the XTEINK X4 Memory Issue Matter?
Functionally? No. And yes, you should still absolutely get one.
The X4 and X3 is an ESP32 device. It’s not Android. It’s not multitasking. It’s not running apps. It’s not doing anything that needs megabytes of RAM. If you have played with Crosspoint, you can see the XTEINK X4 can do a lot with limited memory and having read more than a few books, the memory is not a limitation (books are stored on microSD, not on board).
If this were an Android e‑reader like the promised XTEINK S4, the difference between 128MB and 400KB would be catastrophic. As is, it’s mostly academic. The X4 performs exactly as expected and intended.
If anything, this whole episode shows the microreader space is finally getting competitive. XTEINK has been the only real player but with EEGOGO teasing their device and XTEINK publicly having a spat is a sign the category is maturing.
Hope this provides clarity and helps someone else!
