On September 4th at 8am ET, Remarkable has teased it will have BIG news. The green color highlighting in the teaser makes me hope that we’re finally getting a Remarkable 3 with a color eInk display. As a reminder, you can already use colors on the current Remarkable OS just you can’t see them on the Remarkable itself.

As soon as I received the email, I started scouring the FCC database. The FCC listing for the Remarkable 2 hadn’t been update since 2021, but there is an FCC report in 2024 (see below) that may give hints. I also scoured the US Patent and Trademarks Office website; the only thing is a July 2024 patent (US Patent 12045404) for what is method for smarter pressure detection with the stylus/pen (see here).

My bet is on a color eInk Remarkable. Updating the current Remarkable 2 to a Remarkable 3 with simply a PPI increase and backlighting would bring it simply on par with the Kindle Scribe. I’m also hoping for eBook support and a basic app store for templates.

When it comes to color, color eInk displays are really ready for prime time and judging by the ads I see in my various feeds. the Boox Note Air is actively using color to market against Remarkable. With the Boox priced at US$499, a color Remarkable 3 could see a price drop on the Remarkable 2, similar to how Apple keeps older models as an entry-level device.

I hope Remarkable offer a great deal for us long time owners and those of us on the Remarkable Connect plan get a discount on upgrading.

FCC ID Record Refers to New Marker Plus

The FCC database has a confidentiality request dated 8/29/2024 for a model label FCC ID 2AMk2-RM05CA. The confidentiality request is 180 days from FCC approval. This appears to be for a new Marker Plus based on the package label. This can’t be the only big news and I’m hoping the new Marker Plus has some features that make it better suited to a new color display.
